hmm...I should clarify my intent with my blog post: all though influenced by your vacation joke, it was largely a reaction to a myriad of comments I've heard about Michigan over the past three or four years, ever since I've started interacting with people from other states. It has been particularly the case with students in grad programs (99.9% in my grad program...during my first year orientation, I actually sat through a panel called "how to survive in Michigan"), who seem to act as if they are "forced" to be here. Also, the national media hasn't been too pleasant towards Michigan either. So really, the joke was more of a straw on a camels back...I apologize if my commentary came across otherwise. In all actuality, your cohort has been leaps and bounds more positive about coming here than any other group. So I definitely am sorry for the overreaction.

In other news, I hope you are feeling better! Particularly because of the quickly approaching Oberon Party (a celebration of our state's most delicious beverage)...on the positive side, it is the perfect party for someone on a liquid diet ;)

True, Michigan would be astronomically cheaper -- they need to do a better job advertising. :) All I see are billboards for the cider mill, outlets, and Frankenmuth. LOL.

I beg to differ with your assumption that Michigan is a bad place to vacation. on the contrary: Michigan's number two money-maker is tourism. Much of the Midwest chooses to go up north to a cottage for their summer vacations...we have loads of state and national forests, an enormous skiing industry, no. 2 golfing industry, wineries, natural sand dunes, islands, and the most coastline (over 3,000 miles) in the lower 48 states.

Not to mention, a vacation to Michigan would be astronomically cheaper than any vacation you may choose to take to any other part of the world, let alone in the United States. Plus, you'd be doing a great thing for a struggling economy.

here ya on this one. Money is tough to navigate...Fortunately, MSU has stepped up their game and there is help! The Olin Health Center has a financial wellness guy, who I saw and was very helpful. He also helped a couple of my friends: http://olin.msu.edu/financialwellness.php

He'll help you work on a budget, track spending, set up goals, talk about loans, and so on.
